Chinese Heritage And Higher Education
[ send

6 pages in length. Taking example from Michael Ondaatje's "Running in the
Family," the student is able to reflect upon one's own Chinese heritage and
openly relate to the inherent struggles associated with progress and
modernization. That the Chinese legacy is one of hard work and loyal dedication
to one's homeland amidst economic strife, it is not surprising to find that the
student's parents had little time raise their child while they ran the family
business, finding it necessary to send the student to America in search of a
better life through higher education. To the Chinese, a solid education is
tantamount to future economic success. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Chinese Immigration
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. During the period of Chinese immigration to the United
States, the historical construction of the "Oriental" began as an
alien image who threatened "real" Americans. The three images of the
Chinese developed: "pollutant" (a racialized alien who spoiled the
image of California as a free white republic, "coolie" (unfree,
servile labor that threatened the working class) and "deviant"
(Chinese women as prostitute and Chinese men as domestics were sexual threats
undermining the American ideal of the cult of domesticity and the beliefs
against racial mixing). Examining the specific political, economic, social and
legal treatment the Chinese immigrants received, one might readily surmise that
the coolie image contributed most to that treatment and eventual exclusion of
the Chinese. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
